INHALTE UND ZIELE:

Merce Cunningham was a pioneer of the American Modern Dance, based in New York, he was a lead dancer of the Martha Graham Dance Company and after he left the ensemble, he created his own style based on abstraction and the key element of „Motion and not Emotion“.

A strong sense of ones spine is an integral part of Cunningham Technique, which explores the way the back works in all directions, either in opposition to the legs or in unison with them. Space and sense of direction is another key factor. It is a rigorous technique for the body and mind.

Directional changes, and perplexed movement that does not always follows the organic flow of the body, gives new choices and freedom of expression.

The wide range of rhythms are also a part of this technique. Rhythms come from the moving body and are mainly based on versatile counting and accents, rather than music perspective. Music and movement are often separate in Cunningham style.

Together with an avant-garde team of collaborators from different artistic fields, Merce Cunningham questioned how the music, set design, costumes and lighting can co exist in a specific time and space, using different chance procedure techniques to determine the relation between the different art forms, without a preconceived idea or decision making based on story telling. The students will be introduced to Cunningham unique chance procedure tool which makes use of chance in developing movement sequences and choreographic phrases.

Cunningham main influences were Ballet and Graham technique, however his choreography emphasises movement without narrative or emotion, directly opposing to both ballet and Graham.

Merce Cunningham said: “There’s no thinking involved in my choreography… I don’t work through images or ideas. I work through the body… If the dancer dances, which is not the same as having theories about dancing or wishing to dance or trying to dance, everything is there. When I dance, it means: This is what I am doing.“

Unterrichtssprache ist englisch. Lorenzo versteht und spricht aber auch sehr gut deutsch.

Für fortgeschrittene Hobbytänzer*innen, Tanzunterrichtende, Choreographen*innen, professionelle und semiprofessionelle Tänzer*innen, in Ausbildung befindliche Tänzer*innen und Tanzpädagogen*innen und ähnliches.
Für die Teilnehmer*innen unserer Weiterbildung Modern Dance Intensive Studies – level 1 (Grundstufe)
oder
Mit guten Kenntnissen in Modern Dance/Contemporary – egal in welchen zeitgenössischen Techniken/Stilen.
Vorkenntnisse in Cunningham-Technik sind nicht nötig. Ein schnelles Aufnahmevermögen wird vorausgesetzt.
